Gift Guide: First Birthday

Birthday Plate
I love the idea of having a special plate that only comes out on someone's birthday. It's such a fun tradition to start right from the beginning.  Usually one year old's will be getting lots of toys that won't necessarily last for many years, but this is a unique gift that definitely will stand the test of time. You can find many different and personalized options on Etsy!

Family Photo Book
We actually made one of these family photo albums for my son's first Christmas (a few months before he turned one) and it was, and still is at 18 months, one of his favorite things.  He loves looking through all the pictures and pointing out each family member.  You can make them through a variety of different vendors (like Shutterfly, Chatbooks, etc.) but we like these simple ones from the baby store.  Just print off your photos and insert!  It's nice because you can also change out the photos as your child grows.

B. Baby One Two Squeeze Blocks
These B. Baby One Two Squeeze blocks are perfect for little hands because they are small, light weight, and made of this flexible rubber material.  If they happen to drop one on themselves, they won't get hurt.  We bought these for my oldest six years ago and still have the same set for my third baby.  They hold u so well! They look as if we just bought them and believe me, they have seen some things...

Little Tikes Rocking Horse
The Little Tikes Rocking Horse is one of those classic gifts.  Well, maybe it's classic 80's gift, but still. My boys have loved having it and it lasts far past the one year old stage.  It is a little big and does take up some room, but just stick it in a corner and enjoy.

Bizzy Bear Books
I don't even know who gave us our first Bizzy Bear book but they have been by far my Waylon's most favorite book since he received it for his first birthday.  Each page has short, rhyming text along with an interactive, tactile, moveable part.  I usually am not a fan of lift-the-flap or moving pieces books since I knew they will just be ripped apart soon, but these have pleasantly surprised me.  The pages are thick and the moving parts are also very sturdy.  There are many different Bizzy Bear titles to choose from and each one is just as cute and durable as the last.

Melissa and Doug Building Blocks
I feel like building blocks are just a staple that every pre-k classroom has and it was something I wanted in our home.  They are one of those open ended toys that has endless possibilities, work with other toys, and grow with your children.  My son is six and still plays with these on the regular.  They are the one toy on our shelf that has never rotated out in the past six years.  Melissa and Doug are one of my favorite toy brands.  They always have quality toys and these building blocks are no different.  You can usually find these for about $15 cheaper at Home Goods or TJ Maxx around the holiday time as well!

Baby Einstein Piano
We got the Baby Einstein Piano for Christmas for my middle child last year and it is still one of the most played toys in the house.  It has the option to play songs or notes and has two different volume levels.  The music and sound quality is very light and pretty; not obnoxious and loud like other noise toys - those toys do not live in my house, lol.  Even at the higher volume, it is still a moderate level that you probably wouldn't even hear in another room.  The Baby Einstein Piano is the perfect size for little to crawl up to or sit at and pound away.  It is all wood so not buttons/keys are getting stuck.  We have been playing it daily for close to a year now and it is still in great shape and we haven't had to trade out the batteries. It does come with music sheet cards that are made of a durable flexi-plastic and have color coded notes for your little one to learn songs.  You can pop them into the piano and hit the play button for the song to play or you can take them out and it still does the same thing.  We haven't made it to the music sheets yet so obviously the Baby Einstein Piano will be a toy that grows with us.

Little Tikes Lawn Mower
Our first born was an early walker and he received this Little Tikes Lawn Mower for his first birthday.  I'll be honest, it wasn't even on my radar.  Turns out it was his favorite thing.  He loved pushing the little lawn mower around the yard just like his daddy.

Instruments
I know this is a hot button issue for some people but musical instruments in my house don't bother me.  Now, I'm not saying bring in the drum kits and the amp, but if that's what my kids is into, then we will go from there.  All of my kiddos have loved their little musical instruments from the time they could grasp them.  You don't need a ton of different ones and if there are some in the pack that are a hard no for you (or turn out to be obnoxious), set them aside.  Home Goods usually always has a set lying around in their toy department you could snag.

Highlights Hello Magazine Subscription
I'm all about giving the gift of reading and not adding to an already large toy collection.  Highlights magazine has an edition for babies called Hello.  It comes to your door monthly and is made of this indestructible flexi-paper that can be gnawed on, torn at, and crumbled and it still magically stays the same.  It is small enough for littles to hold in their hands and be able to do all those aforementioned things.  They have real-life pictures full of diverse children (gender, ethnicities, abilities, etc.), songs, poems, their famous hidden pictures, illustrations, and ideas to go along with every issue.  This is one of my go to gifts for a first birthday.  You can usually find Highlights Hello on sale on Groupon and then print off the free certificate on Highlights' website!

Wooden Rainbow Stacker
I'll be honest when I say I purchased this wooden rainbow stacker as a room decoration and had hopes (not necessarily high) that it would be played with but wasn't holding my breath.  I am happy to say that it has earned it's place in our family! Both of my boys (6 and 18 months) play with both of our wooden rainbow stackers.  We have a small one and a large one.  They break them down to make mazes, roads, build with them, you name it, they've done it!  My youngest one (9 months) is starting to show an interest in them as well!  Probably because the boys are playing with them, but I'll take it!

Tunnel
The tunnel is one of those toys that is great and fun and magical annnnnnnd BIG.  It's five feet long.  It's not small.  Until you package it up and then it lays flat and slips right under the bed!  But when it is out and being played with, it can definitely be in the way.  All that to be said, it's fun and very well loved in our house.  We got ours for my son's first Christmas (right before he turned one) and it is still played with today and in great condition.  Again, Melissa and Doug toys for the win!

Inflatable Ball Pit
If you ask my husband he will tell you that the Inflatable Ball Pit is a hard no.  But then if you reword your question to ask him if his children love it, he will grudgingly say yes, HAHA!  He just really doesn't like the balls all over the house but that doesn't happen as often as he thinks.

I know there are a lot of different versions of ball pits out there but my little ones have always loved these.  They love feeling like they are in a tent and popping the balls through the holes and the opening at the top.  When it was just my one, that thing lasted forever.  Now that we have a six year old and one year old playing WWE in it, it is much easier to pop.  We have gone through three and now my six year old is banned and bummed, lol.  It definitely does NOT come with enough balls so buy a pack as well.  I have only been able to find them at Kohl's or Walmart and usually your chances are better around the holidays, so if you want one and see one, snag it!

What are some of your favorite gifts for your favorite one year old?

Gift Guide for Families

No matter how prepared I think I am around the holidays, something always pops up that I wasn't expecting.  That includes people who need gifts.  I'm not a big drinker so I don't always assume that about other people.  So when it comes to hostess gifts I don't usually bring a bottle, I take a small gift that their whole family can enjoy.  These gifts are also great for giving to relatives if you're buying for the whole family as opposed to individual people.  As always, the trick to good gift giving is to know who you are buying for.  Some of these items might be perfect to just have on hand and give to any family, but others might be more specific.

Advent Calendars
Advent Calendars are a perfect gift to give to a family. There are so many different kinds that you can really tailor the gift to the recipient. They are a wonderful way to create memories and traditions that last a lifetime. What family wouldn't want that?

This magnetic Advent Calendar from Melissa & Doug is so well made and perfect for little hands. Each of my three children have one for their room and we have gifted them to my nephews as well!

Resort Day Pass
Gifting a Resort Day Pass is like giving a family a free vacation but without all the trouble of packing, traveling, etc.

Choose a resort in their city that has all the amenities and extras they could want and send them on their way!

We have done this in our town and LOVED it! HIGHLY recommend!

Pizza Roulette Wheel
I'm a sucker for a unique gift and this Pizza Roulette Wheel is just that. Every Friday night in our house is pizza Friday and I could absolutely see us using this when the kids get older.

I love the way that it promotes sitting down and eating together as a family, as well as everyone working together to get a job done.

Side note, if you have not shopped on Uncommon Goods for your gifts, you're missing out!

Suspend
You can never go wrong giving a new game for family game night. Suspend by Melissa and Doug is a game of strategic thinking, logic, and balance.

This version is good for ages 6+ but they also have a Suspend Junior version that is better for little ones. It is still fun for the whole family and has some extra twists added to keep the young ones engaged.

The Adventure Challenge: Family Edition
The Adventure Challenge: Family Edition books are a great gift for any family! They promote new experiences and memorable moments with your crew. It is a scratch off book, so the activities are a surprise.

There is space to write down your memories and leave a picture. Many of the adventures would be more for families of a little older kids (5 and up). Little ones can still participate but if you’re gifting to a family with just a baby I would maybe choose another edition.

They also have:

Couples Edition

Friends Edition

Solo Edition

In Bed Edition

Coloring Page Banner
These coloring page banners from Friends Art Lab are wonderful to give to the kids in your life! They are so well-made and the paper is such high-quality that neither markers nor paint bleed through onto your floor. Pair it with crayons or markers for a perfect gift set.

Due to its size and length, multiple people can be coloring at the same time. This is definitely something you need at your holiday gatherings! I have purchased a few for our house and as gifts and they are always a huge hit. Check out her website for all the different banner styles.

Christmas Scavenger Hunt
Is your family competitive? This holiday themed scavenger hunt allows families to compete in the ultimate Christmas festivities search.

It can be played inside or outside and is open-ended enough that you can make up your own unique family rules.

A festive gift that ties in the holiday spirit and promotes togetherness… count me in!

Q & A a Day for Kids
We were gifted this Q & A a Day for Kids when my son was four and I absolutely love it!

Every day, for a year, there is a question for your child to answer. Some of them are “what’s your favorite _____,” while others are a little more thought provoking. It has enough spaces to do it for three years so you can see how their answers and handwriting changes.

It’s a sweet reminder of their personalities and quirks when they were little.

Almanac of Fun
You know how every day is a “National Something” day? This Almanac of Fun book teaches your kids about each of those days!

It is filled with interesting facts, puzzles, craft ideas and more. It is very engaging and interactive and can be used for an entire year! We got one last year and have really enjoyed it. It’s fun to randomly open up the book and find its National Smore Day. Obviously we need to stop what we're doing and make smores (and memories)!

I will say, if you have the previous years books, you probably don't need this one.

101 Movies to See Before You Grow Up
101 Movies to See Before You Grow Up is one of my go to gifts to give. Pair it with one of the items from the book and you’ve just given a family or child activities to do for years! The books are interactive so it also counts as a keepsake.

Baking Kit
Need a little hostess gift? Are you “elf-ing” the neighbor’s house? Grab some holiday kitchen spoons and a bag of cookie mix and you’ve got yourself a sweet treat for any family to enjoy together!

Dollar Tree and Walmart usually have both of these items for a very low cost.

Sneaky Cards Play It Forward
This random act of kindness Sneaky Card: Play It Forward pack is a wonderful way to spread some holiday cheer this year. What is even better is that it is not holiday specific, so it can be done all year round.

Choose a card and complete that random act of kindness for a stranger. Then, pass that card along to the stranger and tell them to pay it forward! In theory, that stranger is supposed to do what the card says and pass it along so the cycle of kindness keeps repeating itself. There are definitely some wonderful lessons to be learned from this pack and adventures to be had.

They also have Sneaky Card Play It Forward 2 if you want to keep the goodness going!

What to Watch Streaming Dice
Combine these What to Watch Streaming Dice with a popcorn bowl and some candy, or even a gift card to a streaming service, and you’ve got yourself a fun night in!

This is a perfect little set for people who already have everything!

Table Topics Conversation Cards
Sometimes you stumble upon something you didn’t even know you needed. We got a set of Table Topics Conversation Cards in a kids meal one time and when we opened them up at the dinner table our conversation was amplified by ten. I never thought our dinner table talk was stale (and I still don’t), but it can become routine.

Table Topics cards have so many interesting questions and prompts that you either wouldn’t normally think of or they wouldn’t come up in daily dinner conversation. My son loves learning things about us as real people and not just mom and dad and I like that I’m learning new things about my husband even after 12 years.

Beat That!
You can never go wrong with giving a game as a family gift. Everyone gets to participate and without a doubt memories are made. What kind of memories you make depends on the game...

Beat That! is similar to the wacky, funny minute-to-win-it games but with a twist. This is good for ages 8+. If you're looking for games for littles, I highly recommend Peaceable Kingdom games.

What are some of your favorite family gifts you like to give or have received?  I would love to hear your ideas in the comments!

Favorite Stocking Stuffers [outdoorsy]

These stocking stuffers are great for all ages and range from different levels of outdoorsy.

Go Find It
Go Find It is an outdoor scavenger hunt that you can use over and over again (inside and outside) and each time you play it, it turns out differently.  You choose a card and it tells you to find an object that matches that description.  It's great for any age and you can even challenge your older kiddos by having them pick more than one card to match an object.

There is a second set: Go Find It Too.  It is essentially the same concept, just with different cards.

Ultimate Survival Guide for Kids
We got the Ultimate Survival Guide for Kids for my son when he was six during his "survivalist" phase. This was filled with useful information for any outdoorsman! Even though it says for kids, my husband and I found it very interesting.  The info graphics are very appealing and with the chunked text it makes for an easy and engaging read.

Pocket Microscope
This pocket microscope is perfect for any insect lover out there!  It fits easily in your hand (and pocket) and has a light to help you see better in the dirt.  The zoom on this thing is amazing!  Check out the photos in the reviews to see what I mean.

Walkie Talkies
Walkie talkies are perfect for your littles who don't have phones or when you're out in the woods exploring.

Shatterproof Magnifying Glass
This magnifying glass is legit.  It's got some heft to it but it has been put through the test at our house and it's still in great condition!

Binoculars
Every young wilderness explorer needs binoculars! We have these and as far as binoculars go, they're pretty great. Very sturdy, they fold up nicely, and have a compass.  I don't know much about binoculars but that's all I really need them to do. LOL

OFF! Botanical Insect Repellent
This!  I know Off seems like a silly thing to put in a stocking but it is fast becoming one of my favorite things.  My kiddos love to be outside at all times of the day and in Florida, at some point, we're running into mosquitos.  This is a plant based lotion that is NOT greasy, DOESN'T smell, and WORKS!  We hiked through a swampy trail for three hours and never got bit once.  Miracle lotion I tell ya!

It also comes in a deet-free spray but I haven't tried that one yet.

Spot It! Camping
We love playing Spot It!  It's a game for all ages and small enough to throw in your purse and bust out during down time.  They have tons of different themes/versions as well!

Solar Power Charger Bank
My husband uses his Solar Powered Charger every time he goes camping.  He loves that thing!  Most of them have flashlights and multiple USB/charging ports on them but different brands have different bells and whistles.

Survival Bracelet
These survival bracelets are so cool!  It comes two to a pack and they each have an SOS LED Flashlight, compass, rescue whistle, and fire starter.  We gave one to my son when he was six and showed him how to use everything properly.

Sprout Pencils
These cool Sprout Pencils are able to be planted when you are finished with them!  How cool to use these and then get some fresh basil out of is?!

Backyard Adventure Journal
You don't have to be a survivalist or boy scout to enjoy the outdoors!  This fun little sketch book is perfect for young ones to do as a scavenger hunt around their backyard.

National Geographic Magazine Subscription
I love giving magazine subscriptions as gifts.  They're perfect for people who already have everything!  There are a couple different nature magazines that I love for all different ages:

National Geographic Kids (7+)
Nat Geo Little Kids (4-6)
Ranger Rick (7+)
Ranger Rick Jr. (4-6)
Ranger Rick Cub (1-3)
Zoobooks (5+)

Bear Grylls Adventures
Bear Grylls is this ultimate survivalist and he writes a wonderful series of books for kids - fiction and non-fiction, but I really love the fiction series (I think there are about 12 in total)!  Perfect size for a stocking stuffer!

Do you have fun outdoors items that you love?  Let me know in the comments!

Holiday Gift Giving Guide

Happy Holidays!  It's my favorite time of the year... gift giving season!  I know many people dread this portion of the holidays, but gift giving is my love language.  I adore finding specials items for my friends and family that show how much I am thinking about them and what they mean to me.

One thing that can make this stressful is trying to limit how much I spend and how many gifts each person gets in our household.  After a few years of trial and error Christmases, we finally figured out a system that would work for our family and budget.  It is not the end all be all for everyone, including us.  I'm sure it will change as our family does and that's okay!

You have probably seen the "Something they Want, Something they Need..." guidelines before.  We wholeheartedly embraced that concept except I couldn't fathom just getting four gifts.  I know why people do it, I just couldn't do it.  So we did some research and talked to other tried and true parents and got their advice on what they would do differently for the holidays.

MANY of them gave us the same advice:

1. Make the most wanted gift from YOU.  Not Santa.  The big guy gets all the credit and did none of the work. You've earned it.  Take credit where credit is due!

2. Less is more.  They were not wrong here...

We did notice that Santa gave the most gifts and we as parents only gave a few.  We also noticed that with the mass amount of gifts under the tree (our presents including other gifts from out of state family and friends), it was just too overwhelming for our little guy.  He loved everything and was very appreciative, but he didn't play with a lot of it because there was just so much.  When our second one came into the picture and we knew a third was on the way, we decided to scale back. Like I said, I'm a giver (even if the wallet doesn't always agree).  But when you're going to have three kids to buy for, it doesn't sound so bad.

I fell down the rabbit hole that is Pinterest and Gift Giving Guides and finally came up with something that would work for us! I stumbled across this post on the HolFamily blog and it spoke to me.  I loved everything about it.  From the simplicity to the eight gifts, from how you could make it your own to how creative you could be, and how you can teach your child meaningful lessons along the way.  In doing this process I saved money and got toys that were meaningful to both of my boys and would not go to waste (we all know those toys...).

Something they Want
This seems like the most obvious gift but it can be hard if their wish list is especially long.  This is usually a big ticket item and very specific to the individual.  We get at least two gifts from their wish list: one from us and one from the big guy.  Every family is different but in our house the big guy only brings one gift per child.  We as parents give the most wanted gift because we can. I want that credit! HAHA!

Something they Need
This is a very broad category.  Asking your kids what they need vs. what you think they need can be VERY different.

Possible Ideas:
An add-on to what they "want" (i.e., they want a bike, they need a helmet)
Replacement items (new art supplies, ballet slippers, etc.)
Open ended items that allow for longer use and more creative play
Toys for the future
Savings account
Furniture or bedding

Something to Wear
There are many different choices in the "wear" category.  You can do the obvious of clothes or shoes, but if your child is all set in that area then you can get creative!

Possible Ideas:
Dress up costumes (we love Melissa and Doug for this!)
Make-up or nail polish
Backpack
Blanket, Snuggie, sleeping bag, robe
Hooded towel, swimsuit, goggles
Jewelry or watch
Weather gear (snow boots, rain coat/boots, etc.)
Favorite team gear or jersey
Hat or sunglasses

Something to Read
Reading has such a tremendous impact on our every day life, even for those who do not like to read.  What is nice about this category is that there are so many different ways to "read."  It is not just limited to print in a book.

Possible Ideas:
Book series (giving a series allows them to keep the love of reading momentum going)
Interactive or activity books
Checklist books
Audible subscription
Monthly Book Subscription
Yoto Player
Tonie Player
Pinna Subscription
Magazine Subscription
Joke book
How to books
Personalized books
Chatbooks

Something to Do
Kids get a lot of toys around this time of the year from various sources.  This is the perfect time to give the gift of adventure, experiences, and memories.  This can be as simple or elaborate as you want and can be individualized or given as a gift for the whole family.

Possible Ideas:
Subscription box (Kiwi Crate, Raddish Kids, etc.)
Season Passes (zoo, science center, theme park, etc.)
Year of Dates or Year of Crafts
Concert Tickets
Trip, camping, hike
Movie tickets and candy
Sporting event
Mini-golf
Sports equipment

Something to Play
Family game time is one of our favorites.  There are a lot of life skills to be learned, bonds to be shared, and memories to make through playing games.  If board games aren't your thing, then there are always other ideas.

Possible Ideas:
Board games (Peaceable Kingdom are some of our favorites for younger kids)
Card games
Marble Run
Instruments
Building blocks or Legos
Yoto or Tonie Player
Tablet
Video game
Sports equipment
Arcade tokens

Something to Learn
One of the great things about kids is their curiosity.  Giving them the gift of learning can lead to hours of entertainment and new life skills.  Usually these are the gifts they don't expect but end up enjoying the most.

Possible Ideas:
STEM Kit
Art Kit
Cookbook
Sewing Machine
Art and Crafts
Register for a class (art, baking, sport, etc.)
Science Experiments
Musical Instrument
How to books
Language program

Something Made
Handmade gifts are just a little extra special.  It tells the recipient that you were truly thinking about them.  You don't have to be the craftiest person to create, make or purchase a handmade gift.  You could also do a Secret Santa twist on this one where siblings have to make a gift for each other.

Possible Ideas:
Family photo album
Digital Photo Frame with uploaded photos
Lego table
Marshmallow shooters
______ Kit (specific to their interests)
Bath Bombs
Year of Crafts
Story Stones
Fleece tie blanket
Homemade Playdough

I know that was a lot of information and I hope it helped!  If you would like to snag this freebie to try it out with your family, click HERE.  There are some different list options depending on what categories you want to do with your kiddos.  You can use this as a brainstorming sheet for yourself or have your kids fill it out as their wish list!
